A large and energetic crowd gathered at the Silent Tree on campus Tuesday evening after rumors spread that Batman had appeared. By around 8:06 PM, students had already begun assembling, with attendance quickly swelling to at least 200 people.
Early in the event, confusion set the tone. Multiple individuals dressed as Batman appeared one after another, leaving the crowd unsure who, if anyone, was the “real” Batman. At one point, a random attendee wearing a Batman mask stepped forward, only to be followed minutes later by another, more convincingly dressed figure. The uncertainty fueled excitement, with students chanting “We want Batman” as speculation grew.
The moment took a surreal turn when a blonde man with a mustache removed his mask and claimed to be Batman. The crowd remained skeptical at first, and even brought in another attendee to help verify the claim. As more costumed figures arrived, the scene became increasingly chaotic and theatrical, with some in the audience beginning to believe they were witnessing the real deal.
At approximately 8:14 PM, the mystery reached its peak when the identity behind the mask was revealed. The man was identified as William Simpson, the Associated Students president, quickly dubbed “UCSD Batman” by the crowd. Chants of “take it off” led to the final unmasking, confirming what many had begun to suspect.
Following the reveal, Simpson addressed the crowd, thanking students for their enthusiasm and participation. In a moment that captured the playful spirit of the event, he declared, “I am Batman, ok.”
By 8:17 PM, the event had officially concluded, though students lingered and swarmed Simpson, eager to meet the now campus famous figure. What began as a rumor turned into a lively and memorable gathering, blending humor, mystery, and community in a uniquely UCSD way.
