UC San Diego has officially announced the launch of its Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence, a groundbreaking program that redefines how universities approach technical education in the 21st century. The degree allows students to engage with core artificial intelligence concepts from their very first quarter on campus, setting it apart from traditional computer science and data science pathways. Administrators say the initiative reflects both academic foresight and industry demand, ensuring that graduates are equipped to design, implement, and critically assess intelligent systems across a range of fields.
Students entering the program will explore topics such as machine learning, deep neural networks, natural language processing, and computer vision. The curriculum is structured to combine foundational theory with extensive hands-on experience. By their second year, students are expected to participate in real-world projects through the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute and the Jacobs School of Engineering. Collaboration across disciplines is central to the degree’s philosophy, connecting AI to biology, cognitive science, public policy, and the humanities.
Administrators and faculty emphasize that the program’s purpose extends beyond technical mastery. Ethical responsibility and social awareness are key pillars of instruction. As Dean Albert P. Pisano explained, the goal is to prepare students who understand both the potential and the consequences of artificial intelligence. “Our graduates will not only develop the tools that shape the future,” he said, “they will also ensure those tools serve humanity.” The launch of this program positions UC San Diego among the few institutions nationwide to fully integrate AI learning at the undergraduate level, affirming its reputation as a hub for innovation, research, and forward-thinking education.
