Simpson Reelected ASUCSD President in Wide Margin Victory

William Simpson has won reelection as Associated Students UC San Diego President, defeating Executive Vice President Mina Nguyen in the 2026 campuswide election. According to vote totals communicated to campaigns, which had not yet been released in a detailed public results sheet by Associated Students at the time of writing, Simpson received more than 4,000 votes while Nguyen received a couple hundred over 1,000. These figures indicate a margin of several thousand votes in Simpson’s favor. The reported totals are based on campaign communications and were not yet confirmed in an official public results release.

Simpson first became president in spring 2025 after winning the presidential runoff with 59 percent of the vote, taking office for the 2025 to 2026 academic year. Nguyen was elected in the same cycle as Executive Vice President and continues to serve in that role alongside Simpson. In the 2026 election, she sought to move from Executive Vice President to President but finished behind Simpson in the reported vote totals.

The 2026 presidential race was conducted under the Elections Code that took effect on December 3, 2025. The code provides that executive officers are elected on a campuswide ballot and, in the absence of ranked choice voting, the winner must receive a simple majority of votes cast. The Elections Manager is responsible for tabulating votes, documenting any irregularities or grievances, certifying the results under the supervision of the Associate Director, and announcing the certified outcome to the student body.

Available records of Associated Students elections since the early 2010s indicate that a different individual was elected president each year prior to Simpson. Recent presidents include Sky Yang, George Chi Lo, and Leslie Vallejo Avila, each of whom served a single term. Simpson’s 2026 victory therefore secures him a second consecutive term and makes him the first ASUCSD president in at least a decade to be reelected, based on publicly documented election results.
