The Shadows Are About To Clear: Who is UCSD Batman?

Wednesday, October 29. The university was buzzing in excitement for the holiday. Even in the fog. Hidden in the chaos is the element, looming over students like a thundercloud waiting to erupt. And he’s there too. Waiting. Countless months of nights have turned him into a nocturnal being. He must choose his photoshoot spots carefully. It's a big campus. He can't be everywhere. But they don't know where he is. We ought to have a signal, for when he is out. When that light hits the sky, it's not just a call- it's a reminder. To them. Mystery is a tool. They think he’s hiding in the shadows. But he is the shadows. Such nights all roll together in a rush. Behind the mask. In the morning, does he have to force himself to remember everything happened as he heads down Library Walk?

Batman remains to this day a core symbol of superhero culture. His uniqueness lies in the power he wields in the absence of any other-worldly or sci-fi powers. As a vigilante fueled first by revenge and then eventually for the people of Gotham, Batman’s character arc allows viewers and readers to witness his growth as a person. Perhaps here lies the most nuanced and thought-provoking aspects of Batman: he becomes a superhero when he is humanized, when he realizes his role in the city of Gotham.

As such, people across generations and background have looked to Batman as a relatable character: one whose triumphs do not lie in his immunity from struggle, but in his perseverance to overcome them. Recently, as Halloween and Comic-Cons have picked up in popularity, Batman, whether it be the original or a canon spinoff, resurfaces as a well-liked costume choice.

Still, Batman may seem like a far-fetched idea to most Tritons; honestly, who would expect a nocturnal vigilante to patrol Sun God Lawn, read editions of The Guardian, and remind residents to throw out their trash appropriately? And yet, he does.

Indeed, UC San Diego has its very own Batman, known to the masses through the Instagram page @ucsdbatman. Since the first post on October 29, 2025, the Instagram page has garnered over four thousand followers and has posted 25 times since. Many are curious to know the true identity of UCSD Batman, and another Instagram page dedicated to this purpose (@whoisucsdbatman) posted four days ago in conjunction with UCSD Batman that the official reveal would be happening. Fan theories suspect Cole Port, a UC San Diego student from the Class of 2029, and William Simpson, current AS President who is re-running for the next academic year (mirroring Batman’s political legacy??). Who is it? Is it someone completely different? Find out soon. Official reveal is on Tuesday April 7 at 8pm at Silent Tree. Follow Triton Tory’s Zakaria Kortam for live reporting updates.
