Zohran Mamdani Wins New York City Mayoral Race with Majority Vote

Zohran Mamdani, representing the Democratic Party, has won the New York City mayoral election, according to projections from The Associated Press. With 90 percent of the vote counted, Mamdani received 1,033,471 votes, accounting for 50.4 percent of ballots cast.

Independent candidate Andrew M. Cuomo followed with 852,032 votes, or 41.6 percent, while Republican Curtis Sliwa finished third with 145,773 votes, representing 7.1 percent. In total, 2,049,945 votes were reported at the time of the projection.

Mamdani’s victory marks a continuation of Democratic leadership in the city, maintaining the party’s long-standing hold on the mayor’s office. The campaign focused heavily on housing affordability, public safety, and equitable economic recovery, issues that dominated public debate throughout the race.

Cuomo’s independent bid drew notable attention as a high-profile challenge, while Sliwa maintained a smaller but vocal base emphasizing crime prevention and public order.

The Associated Press called the race after determining Mamdani’s lead could not be overcome with the remaining uncounted ballots. Official certification of the results will follow once all votes are tallied and verified by election authorities.
